Julia Holden defines her painting practice in relation to the disciplines of photography and film. Applying lo-fi stop-motion animation techniques to the traditional practice of oil painting, Holden 'animates' painting, thereby opening up an alternative route to thinking about the questions, diversions, doubts and decisions related to the painting process.

Holden's stop-motion animation works extravagantly foreground the handmade, providing the opportunity to extend the painted image's rhythms, narrative and potential meanings. Her works celebrate the discipline of painting in self-reflexive narrative fictions that gently probe the notion of painting as a daily practice, a private, repetitive, meditative ritual or habit.
