Origami Unicorn is a collection of new abstract artworks exploring themes related to science fiction and the psychology of utopia. The title references the final scene of the director’s cut of Ridley Scott’s 1982 film Blade Runner. The paper unicorn discovered in the scene presents a question with regards to the existential nature of the film’s protagonist, Rick Deckard – Is he human, or android? (‘replicant’ in the terminology of the film). The unicorn is referenced here as a symbolic motif serving to reveal an underlying existential principle or truth. This body of work, and the themes it explores, are an extension of the content of my recently completed MFA Degree at Elam School of Fine Arts.
